This thesis explores the state of women's human rights, with a particular focus on key issues such as gender-based violence, economic rights, access to healthcare, political participation, and the rights of minority groups of women. Despite legislative progress, such as the criminalization of femicide and the introduction of quotas for women's political representation, women continue to face numerous challenges in realizing their rights. Gender-based violence, including femicide, remains a serious issue, with 43 cases of femicide recorded between 2020 and 2023. Although legislative changes aim for stricter sanctions, the problem lies in inadequate support for victims and weak law enforcement. Women's economic dependence further complicates their ability to leave abusive relationships, highlighting the need to strengthen women's economic rights. In the labor market, women continue to face discrimination, despite making up the majority of highly educated individuals. They are underrepresented in managerial positions, and the gender pay gap stands at around 11%. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the situation for women, increasing their burden of household chores and caregiving responsibilities, negatively impacting their economic security. Access to healthcare and reproductive rights is also challenging. Although abortion is legal, it is often inaccessible due to doctors' conscientious objections and limited availability in all regions. Low contraceptive use and a lack of comprehensive sexual education lead to high rates of unintended pregnancies among adolescents, particularly in rural areas where resources are often limited. Women's political participation remains low, with women comprising only 19% of representatives in the Croatian Parliament, significantly below the European Union average. Politically active women often face gender-based attacks and threats, further discouraging their involvement in political life. The thesis provides a comprehensive overview of the current obstacles women in Croatia face in realizing their rights and offers recommendations for improving existing policies and developing new strategies to achieve full protection of women's rights and gender equality in all areas of society.
