Abstract
Potrebno je razlikovati više tipova festivala, a koji se u načelu vežu za različite tipove prigoda. Kroz povijest su se festivali ponajprije vezali za različite tipove religijskih događaja, odnosno svetkovina, što je i danas učestalo u Republici Hrvatskoj. Kao festivali danas e najčešće percipiraju organizirane grupe specijalnih događaja kao što su primjerice glazbeni performansi. Festivali su prepoznati kao jedan od čimbenika koji mogu imati vrlo izražen utjecaj na razvoj turizma, a posebice turizma u ruralnim područjima RH. Iz tog razloga potrebno je posebice naglasiti potrebu za održivim razvojem festivala, a koji će festivale razvijati na način da kreira dobrobit za lokalnu (ali i širu) društvenu zajednicu te za gospodarstvo, a uz istovremeno minimalan negativan utjecaj, ukoliko nije moguće kreiranje pozitivnog utjecaja na okoliš.
